Why PoE keeps showing up on serious installs
PoE sends power and data over one cable. That matters because every camera gets a hard line back to the recorder or switch, which cuts down on WiFi dropouts, lag, and battery headaches.
For driveways, side gates, backyards, loading docks, and laneways, a stable hard-wired connection usually matters more than quick setup.
Where wireless can still make sense
Wireless cameras are useful where cabling is unrealistic or where you need temporary coverage fast. A detached shed, short-term rental situation, or interim renovation setup can justify it.
The tradeoff is that convenience up front often means more maintenance later. Charging, signal strength, and missed events become part of ownership.
The Toronto install reality
Older brick homes, finished basements, laneway garages, and mixed-use storefronts all reward good cable planning. A system that works well on day one still needs to work in winter, after a power outage, and when you need playback from three weeks ago.
That is why many local buyers end up choosing PoE for the main cameras, then adding a doorbell or specialty device only where it helps.
