The problem
The property owner wanted the parking lot cameras upgraded and every camera on one recorder in the main utility room. Three of the units had no shared ceiling space to run cable through, and nobody wanted the concrete cut or a tenant’s store opened up.
What we did
We ran heavy-duty EMT conduit along the back brick wall and tucked it under the overhang, out of reach and out of the weather. Drilling the rear brick took most of the first two days. No tenant space was disrupted.
The owner still calls us whenever the plaza needs camera work.

How we did itPlazas with several tenants
When an owner wants every unit on one recorder, the hard part is getting cable between units that do not share a ceiling. We run it in EMT conduit along the back wall, under the overhang where it is out of reach and out of the weather, so no tenant’s store gets opened up. Landlord approval comes first.
Glass storefronts and the parking lot
The retail problem we fix most is a camera facing the glass that goes white at sunrise or when headlights hit it. We use cameras with true WDR of at least 120 dB, set the shutter by hand and angle them 30 to 45 degrees down, so you get the face at the door and the plate at the exit.
Tills without filming PINs
A till camera should show who came to the counter and what happened, without a close view of the PIN pad. Change rooms and washrooms stay out of every view, and audio stays off unless you have a specific legal reason for it.

How many security cameras does a store need?
It depends on the doors, tills, aisles and the lot. The strip plaza above took 12 cameras, most of them on the parking lot. We count them with you on the free site visit.
Can one recorder cover several units in a plaza?
Yes. On a 12-camera plaza job we ran EMT conduit along the back brick wall so every camera reached one NVR in the main utility room, without cutting concrete or entering tenant space.
How much does a retail camera system cost?
An 8-camera system supplied and installed usually costs $5,000 to $6,000, within a range of $3,000 to $9,000. Installing cameras you already bought is about $250 per camera.
Can you install after store hours?
Often, yes. It depends on landlord rules, access and how much cable has to run. We confirm the schedule before the job starts.
Do Toronto stores need signs for video surveillance?
Canada’s Privacy Commissioner advises businesses to tell people that video surveillance is in use and give a contact for questions. Your store is responsible for its own policy; we aim the cameras so the views match it.
