Map the full incident path before choosing camera count
A useful retail layout follows what happens from the sidewalk or mall corridor to the entrance, sales floor, checkout, stock room, receiving door, and exit. We walk that route with the operator and identify where an overview is enough and where a tighter identification view is needed. This avoids the common problem of mounting several wide cameras that show movement but not the detail required to understand an incident. Storefront glass, bright exterior light, mirrors, tall shelving, changing displays, and seasonal layouts are considered before camera locations are finalized.
Checkout coverage should provide context without collecting extra detail
A checkout view should show the customer approach, staff position, merchandise, and what happened around a transaction without aiming directly at PIN entry or capturing more personal information than the business needs. We coordinate the physical camera angle with the till, payment terminal, receipt printer, counter layout, and cable route. If a business wants transaction overlays or another software integration, compatibility and configuration must be confirmed with the selected POS provider; the camera installation alone does not create that integration.
Aisles, high-value displays, and changing merchandise need different views
Long aisles and dense product displays can create blind spots even when a ceiling looks fully covered on a plan. We assess where customers turn, where shelving blocks faces or hands, and whether a high-value display needs a closer view than the general sales floor. Camera height and lens choice matter because an extremely high, wide angle may show that something happened without showing who was involved. The layout should also leave room for reasonable merchandising changes instead of depending on one exact shelf arrangement forever.
Stock rooms and receiving areas complete the story
Many retail incidents do not begin or end on the sales floor. Receiving doors, stock-room entries, staff-only corridors, garbage areas, rear lanes, and parking approaches may need coverage based on the site. We plan those views around deliveries, key access points, after-hours movement, and the route products take into storage. Private staff areas, washrooms, and change rooms are excluded. If the property is leased or part of a plaza, exterior mounting, shared areas, conduit, and access hours should be approved with the landlord or property manager before work starts.
Recorder storage is sized around how the store reviews incidents
A generic retention promise is not useful because storage changes with camera count, resolution, frame rate, activity, recording mode, and hard-drive capacity. We ask how quickly losses, chargebacks, delivery disputes, or safety incidents are normally discovered, then size the NVR around that operating need. The handoff includes clear camera names, accurate time settings, playback, supported mobile or desktop access, and a practical footage-export routine so the responsible person can retrieve a clip when it matters.
Privacy planning belongs in the design, not only on a sign
The Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada advises private-sector organizations to define the business purpose for surveillance, consider less intrusive options, limit each camera field of view, notify the public, secure recordings, restrict access, and destroy footage when it is no longer required. For a store, that means planning the view as narrowly as practical, avoiding spaces with a heightened expectation of privacy, setting roles for live view and playback, and deciding who answers customer questions. Audio should remain off unless the business has established a specific lawful need and reviewed the added privacy implications.
Install around the opening plan or the trading day
For a new shop, the cleanest time to plan camera, POS, and network routes is before ceilings, millwork, and checkout counters are closed. We can coordinate the physical low-voltage scope with the general contractor, electrician, landlord, IT provider, and POS vendor. For an operating store, we review ceiling access, ladder or lift needs, noise limits, locked areas, and possible after-hours or phased work. At completion, views are checked under the lighting available at the time, recording and playback are tested, and the responsible person receives the system walkthrough.
Keep multi-store systems consistent without forcing identical layouts
A second location benefits from consistent camera names, user roles, export steps, recorder organization, and spare-capacity planning, but the views still need to match that store. A street-front boutique, convenience store, showroom, pharmacy, and plaza unit have different entrances, product lines, counter arrangements, and exterior conditions. We can use a repeatable commissioning checklist across locations while documenting the site-specific coverage, network handoff, and access limits for each address.
