Start with how the restaurant actually moves
The useful camera path usually begins at the street and front door, then follows the host area, till or bar, dining room, staff entrance, receiving point, storage, and exterior service areas. We walk that path with the operator before deciding camera count. The aim is to create enough context to understand an incident without filling the room with redundant views or placing cameras wherever cable access happens to be easiest.
Clear transaction context without filming payment details
A till camera should show who approached the counter and what happened around a transaction, while avoiding a close view of PIN entry or other unnecessary payment details. We coordinate the physical camera angle, counter equipment, and network cabling around the POS area. POS accounts, payment processing, and merchant configuration remain with the restaurant's software provider or payment processor.
Back-of-house conditions change the camera plan
Heat, steam, grease, stainless-steel reflections, swinging doors, and changing light can all reduce image quality or shorten equipment life. Instead of treating a kitchen like a standard retail aisle, we assess safer mounting positions and concentrate coverage on circulation, receiving, storage access, and other operationally useful views. Equipment placement must also stay clear of food preparation and any area where cleaning or heat makes the location unsuitable.
Delivery doors and closing time need their own coverage
A restaurant can be most exposed before opening, during deliveries, and after the last guest leaves. We check rear doors, side lanes, waste areas, parking, and staff exits for blind spots, backlighting, and weak night illumination. Exterior cameras are selected and aimed for the actual distance and scene, while recorder time settings are verified so exported footage can be matched to an incident.
Recording and access planned for the people who use it
Retention depends on camera count, resolution, frame rate, activity, and recorder capacity, so it should be discussed before the NVR is chosen. We configure supported playback and export tools, label cameras clearly, and help set up access for the people responsible for the system. Strong passwords, limited user permissions, accurate time, and a simple footage-export routine are more useful than giving every employee the same login.
Privacy choices belong in the site plan
The Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada advises businesses to identify a legitimate purpose, consider less intrusive options, limit the field of view, notify people about surveillance, secure recordings, and delete footage when it is no longer required. In practice, that means avoiding washrooms, change areas, and other private spaces; using clear signage; restricting access; and keeping audio off unless there is a specific, lawful reason for it. The restaurant remains responsible for its surveillance policy and legal obligations.
Installation for an opening or an operating location
For a new restaurant, we can coordinate camera and network cable routes with the general contractor, landlord, electrician, POS provider, and IT team before ceilings and counters close. For an operating location, we can stage the work around quieter periods or approved after-hours access. The final handoff includes camera naming, live view, playback, export, and a check of the views under the lighting conditions available at completion.
