Design the evidence view before marking the cable drop
List the events the system should explain: a person at the front door, a vehicle entering the driveway, movement through a side gate, deliveries at receiving, cash activity, or after-hours entry. Then choose an overview or identification view for each task. A cable at the nearest soffit corner may show the property without showing a useful face.
Walk the plan at eye level and at the proposed mounting height. Check doors, lights, downspouts, eaves, brick details, shutters, signs, trees, future cabinets, garage doors, and likely parked vehicles. The framing plan and exterior elevations should agree with the actual camera field of view.
Choose a recorder and network location that can be serviced
Home-run cable needs a destination with appropriate power, ventilation, network access, physical security, and space for the recorder, PoE switch, patching, monitor connection, and backup-power equipment the final design may use. A hot attic, damp corner, public counter, or sealed cabinet creates avoidable reliability and access problems.
Decide who needs local playback and who may access the equipment. The recorder can be secure without being unreachable. Leave working clearances, a mounting surface or rack plan, and a path for internet service, displays, alarms, access control, or other systems that may need an approved connection.
Use home runs and label both ends
For a wired PoE layout, run an individual compatible data cable from each planned camera back to the equipment location unless the engineered network design intentionally uses a remote switch or fibre link. Hidden joins and mystery daisy chains make testing and future replacement harder.
Give every cable a durable identifier at both ends and record it on the plan. The label should map to a meaningful location such as “Front door facing porch,” not just a number that disappears when a handwritten legend is lost. Photograph open-wall routes before insulation and drywall.
Plan pathways, separation, and protection with the other trades
Coordinate low-voltage routes with electrical, plumbing, HVAC, insulation, cabinetry, roofing, and fire-stopping work. Cable should not be pinched by drywall, laid against sharp metal, buried where fasteners are expected, or routed through spaces and assemblies without the appropriate cable type and protection.
The installer and electrician should confirm applicable code, support, separation, penetrations, grounding or surge considerations, and exterior transitions for the site. Low voltage does not mean no rules, and a clean route on a drawing can become unsafe or unserviceable when it crosses real building systems.
Leave enough cable to terminate and aim—without creating a hidden coil problem
A modest service loop at the camera and equipment end helps with termination, testing, repositioning, and future replacement. The exact allowance depends on the mounting detail. It should be secured and accessible rather than packed into an exterior hole or left loose inside insulation.
Show whether the camera mounts to a solid block, weatherproof box, soffit backing, wall bracket, pole, or ceiling. Blocking should support the actual equipment and aiming load. The cable exit and box must work with the intended camera base so water management and fasteners are not improvised after finishes.
Conduit is useful where change or damage is likely
A pathway can be more valuable than several speculative cables. Consider accessible conduit or pull paths between the equipment area and attic, garage, addition, detached structure, gate, driveway entrance, or other place where future technology is likely to change.
Conduit size, bends, fill, pull points, fire or weather sealing, underground requirements, and separation need proper design. Include a pull string where appropriate, cap and label unused pathways, and document both ends. An empty pipe nobody can find is not future-ready.
Size switch, recorder, and storage around the real camera plan
Count installed cameras plus plausible expansion, then check recorder channels, PoE power budget, network uplinks, resolution, frame rate, recording mode, and retention. An eight-port label does not guarantee enough power or storage for eight cameras at the selected settings.
The storage decision follows how long incidents take to be discovered and how the system records. Higher resolution, higher frame rate, continuous recording, and more cameras use more capacity. Make the retention assumption visible so an equipment substitution does not silently cut the playback window.
Set privacy boundaries while cameras are still movable on paper
The Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada advises organizations to define the surveillance purpose, limit camera range, notify people, secure recordings, restrict access, and keep footage only as long as needed. A pre-wire drawing should mark the intended field of view and any area that should not be captured.
For homes, aim primarily at the owner’s entrances and property rather than neighbouring windows or broad public areas. For businesses and multi-unit properties, policy, signage, audio, employee monitoring, access, disclosure, and retention require building-specific review. The cable location should support the approved privacy plan rather than dictate it.
Test every cable before and after drywall
Inspect and test runs before insulation closes the framing, then test again after drywall, exterior finishing, and painting. Record cable identifiers and results. A cable can be damaged by a fastener or other trade after passing its first test.
Commissioning is the final proof: mount and aim cameras, verify day and night images, name channels, set time, confirm recording and retention, test playback and export, configure authorized remote access, and provide the responsible user with a walkthrough. Pre-wire is successful when the final evidence workflow works.
