What affects retention
Camera count, resolution, frame rate, compression, continuous recording, motion recording, and hard drive size all affect how long footage stays on the recorder.
Higher-quality footage is useful, but it uses more storage. The goal is to keep enough detail without shortening retention more than the property can accept.
Homes and businesses use footage differently
Homeowners often care about deliveries, driveway activity, and recent events. Businesses may need longer retention for inventory issues, staff incidents, receiving disputes, or after-hours access.
That is why a recorder should be planned with the use case, not just the number of camera ports.
Playback should be tested before sign-off
A finished install should include a quick review of live view, playback, search, and export basics. Storage is only useful if you can find the clip when you need it.
