Test recorded motion, not just a still live view
Review the camera after full darkness, then walk the route an incident would take. Check the live view and recorded playback at normal speed, pause on movement, and export a short sample. A porch can look sharp while empty but lose every useful detail when a person moves through it.
Record the time, weather, nearby lights, camera mode, and exact symptom. Compare the same position during the day. If several cameras fail at once, look for a shared setting, recorder profile, or environmental change before treating each camera as a separate hardware failure.
White fog or a glowing halo usually starts with infrared reflection
Many cameras switch to infrared illumination at night. Axis explains that some of that light can reflect back into the lens and create foggy, blurry, or mirrored effects. The camera may be working correctly while its own illumination is overwhelming the image path.
Look at where the haze begins. A bright crescent around a dome, one white edge, or a glow nearest a soffit often identifies the reflector. Temporarily disabling built-in IR for a controlled test can separate reflection from focus or network compression, but restore the intended setting after the test.
Clean the cover with the material the manufacturer specifies
Dust, fingerprints, spider webs, water spots, salt, snow, and a thin film of grime can be almost invisible by day and flare under infrared light at night. Axis lists dirt, dust, webs, and water on a dome as common IR-reflection causes. A protective shipping film left on a new camera can produce a similar result.
Use the camera manufacturer’s cleaning instructions. Avigilon, for example, specifies non-abrasive detergent and a microfiber or other non-abrasive cloth for its dome bubble and warns that scratches can reduce image quality and reflect IR into the lens. Avoid paper towels, solvents, and aggressive polishing on a coated or plastic cover.
The reflector may sit outside the visible frame
A light-coloured wall, soffit, fascia, pole, gutter, ceiling, window, metal bracket, or nearby camera can catch the IR beam. Axis notes that the illumination angle can be wider than the camera’s field of view, so the reflecting object may not appear in the video at all.
Inspect the physical installation from the camera’s position. Re-aiming slightly, moving the camera away from the surface, changing the mount, or reducing IR intensity may solve the issue. Digital privacy masks and image cropping do not stop infrared light from hitting a surface in the real scene.
A clear wall and a blurry person point to exposure, not focus
In low light, the camera can hold the shutter open longer to collect more light. Stationary objects remain recognizable while moving people or vehicles smear across frames. Increasing gain can support a shorter exposure, but it also adds image noise. There is no setting that creates light without a trade-off.
Axis documents this blur-versus-noise balance and recommends shorter maximum shutter time, more available light, or a camera angle where subjects move toward or away from the lens instead of rapidly across it. Tune for the evidence task: detecting motion, recognizing a person, or reading a plate may require different placement and lighting.
Soft detail in the whole scene needs a focus check after dark
If stationary signs, brick joints, and parked vehicles are all soft, check focus. Some cameras need a night-focus adjustment or remote autofocus while in night mode because visible and infrared light do not behave identically through every lens and cover.
Focus on the actual distance where identification matters, not the nearest wall or brightest object. Confirm that the dome is seated correctly, the lens is not aimed through a scratched section, and digital zoom is not being mistaken for optical detail. Preserve the original settings before making changes.
A white face or plate can mean the subject is over-illuminated
Built-in IR designed for a long driveway can be too strong for someone standing close to a door. Reflective clothing and licence plates may also return much more light than the surrounding scene. The result is a readable background with the important subject blown out.
Reduce IR intensity where the camera supports it, adjust the angle or distance, or use scene lighting and equipment suited to the target. Do not judge the correction from an empty view. Repeat the walk test at the near and far limits of the identification area.
Mixed lighting can confuse day-night and exposure decisions
Porch fixtures, headlights, signs, streetlights, and neighbouring floodlights create bright and dark zones. A camera may stay in colour mode too long, switch repeatedly, or expose for one bright lamp while leaving an entrance dark. Light shining toward the lens can also add flare.
Check the day-night threshold, IR-cut behaviour, exposure zone, and wide-dynamic-range setting using the camera’s documentation. Axis notes that switching to night mode earlier can keep the image sharper because there is less low-light noise, while delaying the switch keeps colour longer at the cost of more blur. Change one control at a time and keep a before-and-after clip.
More resolution does not replace useful light and position
A high-resolution camera still has to expose each frame. In darkness, more pixels can mean more noise, lower usable shutter speed, and heavier compression if bitrate or storage is constrained. A closer view with controlled lighting often produces better incident detail than a wide view with a larger megapixel number.
Review mounting height, subject distance, direction of travel, lens field of view, available light, IR range, and the recorder’s night profile together. If one camera is expected to cover an entire property and identify a face at the far corner, the layout may be the limitation rather than the image menu.
Finish with a repeatable night commissioning record
After cleaning, aiming, lighting, focus, or setting changes, capture the same walk route and compare recorded clips. Check the darkest hour, not only dusk. Include wet weather when glare from rain or pavement has been a complaint, and verify the recorder stores the intended night stream.
Save the final image settings, camera name, firmware version, mounting notes, and a short approved sample. Night conditions change with leaves, snow, signs, parked vehicles, and new lights, so maintenance should include a recorded night test—not just wiping the camera and confirming a live thumbnail.
